Admiring Apostle Thomas!

Out of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, I have special love and admiration for Apostle Thomas. Here are few reasons:

Bold Disciple

Apostle Thomas was a bold disciple of Jesus. In John 11:8, the other disciples asked, “Rabbi, a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?" Thomas’ response is in verse 16: "Let us also go, that we may die with him.” I would call this as bold discipleship. I see that only in Thomas! He was true to his words dying as a martyr in India after few years.

Inquisitive

Thomas was too interested in finding out about different things. When Jesus said in John 14:3-4, "...if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going," guess who responded to this? Our inquisitive Thomas! He asked: "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" (v.5). I can well say at this point it was this inquisitive Thomas whom Jesus knew would go to India as a missionary in a few years from then and so he said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me..."(v.6). In a country where millions of gods and goddesses are worshipped and where anything and anyone becomes a god, Thomas brought the message of the “One Way” pointing to Jesus.

Believer

John 20:24-29 is the passage that looks like portraying a doubting Thomas. But it is not so! In fact there were few more disciples who doubted the resurrection of Jesus as mentioned in Matthew 28:17. True that, our inquisitive Thomas said to fellow disciples, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe,” (v.25) Jesus knew it. He is omnipresent! So he lovingly responded to Thomas when he met him, a week later, saying, “ "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe, to which Thomas responded as any believer close to God would say, "My Lord and my God!" (v.27-28) I believe that Apostle Thomas was the first one to say this personal statement displaying his belief after the resurrection of Jesus. The other disciples, few of them (Thomas was one of those too) had a transformative experience after this which we read about in John 21. It is doubt that leads to strong faith! Later Jude would say in verse 22, “Be merciful to those who doubt.”

Missionary

Apostle Thomas arrived in India in 52 AD, landing at Maliankara in Kerala to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. It is said that he established seven churches. Later he was martyred in Chennai. We are those Jesus mentions about in John 20 after the personal confession of Thomas, when Jesus said, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (v.29) But has not a price been paid by Jesus himself on the cruel cross and one of his disciples, our beloved Thomas in India dying as a martyr, before we would believe Jesus as our Saviour? The blood of Jesus and martyrs like Thomas is the seedbed of mission and churches today.

My takeaways: Am I merciful to the doubting like Jesus was to Thomas? Apart from confessing my faith am I showing my faith in action like Thomas did? My goal is Philippians 2: 10-11: to see at the name of Jesus every knee would bow, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. What is yours? 

The Proverbs 31 Family

 

We have a tendency to teach Proverbs 31 to women only. But it has been written by a woman to a man, a mother to her son! This beautiful piece of poetry was penned by the mother of King Lemuel. Scholars say that this could be Bathsheba, the mother of king Solomon.  Therefore, it would be good to see this beautiful portion of Scripture in the perspective of a family. The mother basically wrote to her son what to look for in a woman of his choice and how orderly a family of her son would be if he can find the woman that she describes.

Witnessing Family

Firstly, the mother describes how her son should be as a king. Lemuel should be a man of chastity and temperance (v.1-5). He should also comfort the afflicted and should be a voice of the voiceless (v.6-9). The family her son is going to build would be one that would witness beyond the boundaries of their house. There is also a mention of such a witness in the woman her son would look for: she opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy (v.20).

Working Family

A strong work culture is seen in the family unit that the mother prescribes (v.13-27). An independent working woman is the highlight here! The Proverbs 31 woman was a hard worker to the extent that she would consider buying a field and out of her earnings she would plant a vineyard (v.16). She is a successful entrepreneur and her trading is profitable (v.18). Work is a mandatory blessing that God gave Adam (Genesis 2:15), before he and Eve fell in sin. Work is a blessing because the fruit of labour makes a person to be independent at any given situation. That is why the woman mentioned here can laugh at the days to come (v.25). Also it is the work of her hands that earns her honour and praise (v.31).

Worshipping Family

The hardworking woman is a woman who fears God (v.30). No wonder she is a woman of noble character, rarer than rubies (v.10). She is a wise woman (v.26) because wisdom is a derivative of fearing God (Proverbs 9:10 and Psalm 111:10).  Together the couple make a family of great values (v.11-12, 28-29). The woman earns the praise of her husband and her children and the husband earns the respect of the society they live in (v.23, 28-29).

A worshipping family of God would be a working and witnessing family. Worship, Work and Witness go together, hand in hand. The fear of the Lord leads us to a tangible blessing of work and witness. God bless our family to be one like the Proverbs 31-family! God Bless.

New Name

 

Names are important to us. They give us an identity at the most basic level. And names are important to God.  In the very beginning, God gave Adam the significant job of naming all the animals and birds, He had just created (Genesis 2:19-20). In Biblical times people had their names changed to a new name! The Biblical name changes I have mentioned below are not merely for the sake of change. In most cases, God changed their names to signify that they had been made new.

Abram to Abraham

Abraham's life was dictated by his father, who inexplicably makes the decision to leave Ur, the centre of civilization in the ancient Middle East, planning to take his entire family to Canaan (Genesis 11:31). Abram had no choice.  Genesis 12 changes everything. The call of God sets Abram on the path to becoming the father of all who have faith in God (Romans 4:11).

Genesis 17:5 became Abraham’s pivotal point. It says, "No longer shall your name be Abram (exalted father), But your name shall be Abraham (father of a multitude); For I will make you the father of many nations." His name got changed from being an 'Exalted Father to a Few' to 'Father of a Multitude'.

Sarai to Sarah

Sarah had a similar metamorphosis. God said to Abraham in Gen 17:15, 16, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai (my princess), but her name will be Sarah (Princess). ​I will bless her, and indeed I will also give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." Sarai signified my princess, as if her honour were confined to one family only; Sarah signifies a princess, namely, of multitudes.

Many More had Name Changes

Jacob, a name that meant a deceiver changed to Israel, which meant God perseveres. (Genesis 32:28) Similarly Peter got his name changed to Cephas by Jesus in Matthew 16:18. Simon (Simeon in Hebrew) has a meaning, “The one whom hears (Word of God)”, and Peter (Cephas in Hebrew) means “a rock”. The name change is to underline the transformation of the person from a person who just hears word of God to a spiritual rock whose foundation is  strong. Saul became Paul, meaning a great man turned to a small man. Acts 13:9 is the only verse that mentions the name change. This was a name, Paul himself changed for an adaptation to the Roman audience. Perhaps he felt that he was the least of all apostles and so his new name meant a small man!

Earned Name

This is unique. His parents named him Joseph. He was raised in Cyprus. He was from a family in ministry. He owned a God given property. The best part is that he earned a new name, a good name! Yes, that was Barnabas, a name that was earned, a son of encouragement!

Acts 4:36 says: ​Now Joseph, a Levite and native of Cyprus, who was surnamed Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means, 'son of encouragement'), ​sold a field belonging to him and brought the money and set it at the apostles' feet. This was the guy who invested his life in the super apostle, Saul alias Paul and the first one to write the gospel, John Mark.

Well, this is one thing which we all can aim for in our generation. Both Proverbs 22:1 and Ecclesiastes 7:1 tell us how crucial it is earning a good name. A good name is desirable than great riches. It is better than precious perfume!

A New Name is Awaiting!

And the interesting part of this discussion is that we as children of God are awaiting yet another new name! Revelation 2:17 says, “To him who overcomes… I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.” Whatever that new name might be, we know that it is promised to us directly from the words of Jesus. It signifies that our reservation in Heaven has been made and it signifies intimacy and love from Him to those who are His!

 

Three Wise Women

 

In the story of the birth of Jesus, three wise women can be found. There is a wise saying in the Old Testament in Proverbs 31:30 - Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.  In the Old Testament we keep reading the descriptions of the outer beauty of a man or a woman. Rachel's beauty and Absalom's beauty are imprinted in our minds. However, there are no such descriptions in the New Testament. Here are some beauty tips which we can see in these three wise women:

Mary

Mary's wisdom/beauty is seen in her obedience to the angel. She did not say that she would accept the words of the angel regarding virgin - pregnancy, after consulting her father, mother, or her future husband, Joseph. Concerning the Lord’s matter, she was convinced that she can take her own decision because she was the maid-servant of God, not anyone else’s  (Luke 1:38). We need this kind of discernment and wisdom today. (check James 3:17 which I have shared towards the end)

Elizabeth

She was a senior woman. Just as the experience of a virgin pregnancy would bring ridicule to her relative, Mary, this older woman who had a miraculous conception never left her house for five months out of shame (1:25). The two pregnant women would eventually meet and greet and bless each other. It was God through his angel who planned it (1:35). We should learn to honor and love in our families and churches, seniors like Elizabeth, who opened her home to Mary to receive God's blessing and mutual support.

Anna

Anna was another senior woman. She came in Asher's genealogy. She was the daughter of Phanuel. A prophet, she lived with her husband for only seven years from the time of her marriage. She was then about eighty-four years old. She kept fasting, praying and worshiping day and night without leaving the temple in Jerusalem. She saw the baby Jesus, praised the Lord and spoke about Jesus to everyone who was waiting for salvation in Jerusalem. (2:36-38) This is a marvellous testimony of a widow of those days! Isn’t it?

Here are some beauty tips: .. the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. (James 3:17) Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. (1 Peter 3:3,4)

 Is such beauty found in us? Let's think and act.

Receiving Jesus: by the most unexpected

There were at least three unexpected personalities who joyously received the incarnate baby Jesus into the world.

Women Top the List 

Jesus did not consider it an ignominy to be born of the womb of a single virgin mother named Mary. The Holy Spirit enabled her to conceive in a miraculous manner with no man involved in the process. Around the same time there was Elizabeth, a barren woman more advanced in years. She was the wife of Zechariah, the priest. God blessed this senior couple by enabling Elizabeth to conceive. Both of these women could not come in public. Fear of the society gripped them. Elizabeth hid herself for five months in her house (Luke 1:24). Mary could not face the society as well. She was a prime target to be stoned to death as per law pertaining to a virgin conceiving. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21) 

Now it was a neat idea from God to make these women of ignominy, who were relatives as well, to meet and find comfort in one another. (Luke 1:39-45) When they both met, they did not cry and panic. They were Godly women of their times. Their fear changed to a bold faith. They joyously greeted one another filled with the Holy Spirit. The meeting of these women exemplifies inter-generational solidarity which is the need of the hour today. There is wisdom in both generations. What a blend! What a blessing!! 

An Unsung Young Hero 

With these two women there was the foetus, John who leaped in joy from inside of Elizabeth’s womb welcoming the other foetus, the incarnate Jesus. Interestingly Luke mentions John as a baby and not a foetus. (Luke 1:41,44) Luke, as a medical doctor knew the sanctity of life.  John was also filled with the Holy Spirit when he was a foetus. Did not David say, “Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb. All the days ordained for me were recorded in your scroll before one of them came into existence.” (Psalm 139:16) Let us keep in mind that a foetus can leap in joy and a foetus is pained otherwise. 

Are we welcoming Jesus gladly into our hearts and homes? God honoured women of ignominy, both Mary and Elzabeth. Their children became popular and famous. How is our attitude to such women? Are foetuses cared for? Every foetus is a personality. Let us bring about a change in our society by honouring the neglected among us. Happy Advent!

பெந்தெகொஸ்தே என்னும் ஆசீர்வாதம்

 

அப்போஸ்தலர் 2 இல் காணப்படும் பெந்தெகொஸ்தே நிகழ்வின் ஆசீர்வாதங்கள் சிலவற்றை உங்களோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள விரும்புகிறேன். 

ஒற்றுமை என்னும் ஆசீர்வாதம்

சங்கீதக்காரன் இவ்விதம் கூறுகின்றார்: இதோ, சகோதரர் ஒருமித்து வாசம்பண்ணுகிறது எத்தனை நன்மையும் எத்தனை இன்பமுமானது?... அங்கே கர்த்தர் என்றென்றைக்கும் ஆசீர்வாதத்தையும் ஜீவனையும் கட்டளையிடுகிறார். (சங்கீதம் 133) இங்கே பெந்தெகொஸ்தே நிகழ்வில்   120 விசுவாசிகள், ஒரே இடத்தில் கூடினர். (அப்போஸ்தலர் 1:15, 2:1) இயேசுவின் கட்டளைக்குக் கீழ்ப்படிந்து ஒற்றுமையாக ஜெபித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த இந்த விசுவாசிகளின் குழுவினர் மேல் தான் ஜீவனுள்ள தேவனுடைய ஆவியானவர் இறங்க சித்தம் கொண்டார்  (அப்போஸ்தலர் 1:5, 14).  “இரண்டுபேராவது மூன்றுபேராவது என் நாமத்தினாலே எங்கே கூடியிருக்கிறார்களோ, அங்கே அவர்கள் நடுவிலே இருக்கிறேன்” என்று இயேசு முன்பே சொல்லி இருக்கிறாரே. (மத்தேயு 18:20)

 அனைவரையும் உள்ளடக்கிய ஆசீர்வாதம்

பழைய ஏற்பாட்டு காலத்தில் கடவுளின் ஆவியானவர் தனி நபர்கள் மீது இறங்குவார். இங்கே முதன்முறையாக பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவர் யோவேலின் தீர்க்கதரிசனத்தை நிறைவேற்றும் வகையில் விசுவாசிகளான ஒரு கூட்டத்தினர் மீது இறங்கினார்: …அதற்குப் பின்பு நான் மாம்சமான யாவர்மேலும் என் ஆவியை ஊற்றுவேன்; அப்பொழுது உங்கள் குமாரரும் உங்கள் குமாரத்திகளும் தீர்க்கதரிசனஞ் சொல்லுவார்கள்; உங்கள் மூப்பர் சொப்பனங்களையும், உங்கள் வாலிபர் தரிசனங்களையும் காண்பார்கள். ஊழியக்காரர்மேலும் ஊழியக்காரிகள்மேலும், அந்நாட்களிலே என் ஆவியை ஊற்றுவேன். (யோவேல் 2:28,29) விசுவாசிகளின் இந்தக் கூட்டம் ஆண்களையும் பெண்களையும் உள்ளடக்கியதாய் இருந்தது. (அப்போஸ்தலர் 1:14) இது பெண்ணாகிய எனக்கு ஊக்கத்தை அளிக்கின்றது.

 அப்போஸ்தலனாகிய பேதுரு ஆண்கள் பெண்கள் மாத்திரம் அல்ல இறைவனின் முழு திருக்குடும்பத்தையும் இந்த ஆசீர்வாதத்தில் உள்ளடக்கியுள்ளார். நீங்களோ, உங்களை அந்தகாரத்தினின்று தம்முடைய ஆச்சரியமான ஒளியினிடத்திற்கு வரவழைத்தவருடைய புண்ணியங்களை அறிவிக்கும்படிக்குத் தெரிந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட சந்ததியாயும், ராஜரீகமான ஆசாரியக்கூட்டமாயும், பரிசுத்த ஜாதியாயும், அவருக்குச் சொந்தமான ஜனமாயும் இருக்கிறீர்கள். (1 பேதுரு 2:9)

 உலகளாவிய நற்செய்தி என்னும் ஆசீர்வாதம்

அன்றைக்கு அந்த 120 பேரால் பேசப்பட்ட பல மொழிகளாகிய அற்புத வரம் அங்கு ஆண்டவரால் ஆயத்தம் செய்யப்பட்டிருந்த பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு நற்செய்தியை பெற வழிவகுத்தது ஒரு அதிசயம் அன்றோ? கடவுளுக்குப் பயந்த யூதர்கள் வானத்தின் கீழுள்ள ஒவ்வொரு தேசத்திலிருந்தும் பெந்தெகொஸ்தே நிகழ்விற்காக அங்கே கூடியிருந்தனர். (அப் 2:.5) உலகமே அந்த 120 சீடர்களின் அருகாமையில் இருந்தது. மக்களுக்கு நற்செய்தியை பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள பல மைல்கள் பயணம் செய்யாமல் அங்கேயே நற்செய்தியை அறிவித்தது இன்றைய சூழலில் ஊடகங்களின் நல்ல பயன்பாட்டையே எனக்கு நினைவூட்டுகின்றது.

மொழிகள் என்னும் ஆசீர்வாதம்

இந்த யூதர்கள் பல தேசங்களிலிருந்து வந்தது மாத்திரமல்ல, இவர்கள் வெவ்வேறு மொழியியல் சூழல்களில் இருந்தும் வந்திருந்தனர்.

பார்த்தரும், மேதரும், எலாமீத்தரும், மெசொப்பொத்தாமியா, யூதேயா, கப்பத்தோக்கியா, பொந்து, ஆசியா, பிரிகியா,  பம்பிலியா, எகிப்து என்னும் தேசத்தார்களும், சிரேனேபட்டணத்தைச் சுற்றியிருக்கிற லீபியாவின் திசைகளிலே குடியிருக்கிறவர்களும், இங்கே சஞ்சரிக்கிற ரோமாபுரியாரும், யூதரும், யூதமார்க்கத்தமைந்தவர்களும், கிரேத்தரும், அரபியருமாகிய நாம் நம்முடைய பாஷைகளிலே இவர்கள் தேவனுடைய மகத்துவங்களைப் பேசக்கேட்கிறோமே என்றார்கள். (வ. 9-11) அப்போஸ்தலர் புத்தகத்தில் அந்நிய பாஷையின் வரம் இப்படியாக புரிந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட ஒரே இடம் இதுதான்! இன்று நம் சூழலில் இப்படி ஒரு மொழி-அதிசயத்தை எப்படி மீண்டும் பெற முடியும்?

 கேமரூன் டவுன்சென்ட் ஒரு மிஷனரியாக கெளத்தமாலாவில் (Guatemala) பணிபுரிந்தபோது, ​​இந்த கேள்வியை அங்குள்ள ஒரு ஆதிவாசி தலைவர் கேட்டார்:  "உங்கள் கடவுள் மிகவும் பெரியவர் என்றால், அவர் ஏன் என் மொழியைப் பேசவில்லை?" இது டவுன்சென்டின் வாழ்க்கையை மாற்றியது.  டவுன்சென்ட் பைபிள்களை விற்கும் முயற்சியை கைவிட்டு, அந்த பழங்குடியினர் மத்தியில் வாழத் தொடங்கினார். அவர் அவர்களின் சிக்கலான மொழியைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டார், அதற்கு  எழுத்துக்களை உருவாக்கினார், இலக்கணத்தை பகுப்பாய்வு செய்தார், மேலும் புதிய ஏற்பாட்டை பத்து வருடங்கள் என்னும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க குறுகிய காலத்தில் மொழிபெயர்த்தார்.

நாமும் இன்று மக்களின் தாய்மொழிகளில் வேதாகமத்தைக் கொடுப்பதன் மூலம் கடவுளின் செயலை மக்கள் அவரவர் மொழிகளில் அறிவிக்க உதவும் கருவிகளாக இருக்க முடியும்.

 திரள் கூட்டம் என்னும் ஆசீர்வாதம்

பெந்தெகொஸ்தே நிகழ்வின் போது பேதுருவின் பிரசங்கத்தின் விளைவு என்ன? அன்றையத்தினம் ஏறக்குறைய மூவாயிரம்பேர் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார்கள். (வ.41) அதன்பின் அப்போஸ்தலர் நடபடிகள் புத்தகம் விசுவாசிகளின் எண்ணிக்கையில் வளர்ச்சி, மற்றும் சபைகளின் பெருக்கம் பற்றி விவரிக்கின்றது.  விசுவாசிகளின் எண்ணிக்கைப் பெருக்கம் என்பது நம்  இறுதியான, உறுதியான ஆசீர்வாதமும் கூட!

 அப்போஸ்தலனாகிய யோவான் அந்த ஆசீர்வாதத்தைப் பற்றி இப்படியாக பதிவு செய்கிறார்: இவைகளுக்குப்பின்பு, நான் பார்த்தபோது, இதோ, சகல ஜாதிகளிலும் கோத்திரங்களிலும் ஜனங்களிலும் பாஷைக்காரரிலுமிருந்து வந்ததும், ஒருவனும் எண்ணக்கூடாததுமான திரளான கூட்டமாகிய ஜனங்கள், வெள்ளை அங்கிகளைத் தரித்து, தங்கள் கைகளில் குருத்தோலைகளைப் பிடித்து, சிங்காசனத்திற்கு முன்பாகவும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டியானவருக்கு முன்பாகவும் நிற்கக்கண்டேன். (வெளிப்படுத்துதல் 7:9) பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவரின் அருளால் நாம் இந்த ஆசீர்வாதம் நிகழ காரணராக வேண்டும்.

மேற்கண்ட ஆசீர்வாதங்களைப் பெறவும், நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மக்களுக்கு நாம் ஆசீர்வாதமாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் நான் விரும்புகிறேன். இறை ஆசிக்காக வேண்டுகிறேன்

 

தனிமை தேவ சித்தமல்ல!

தன்னை பத்து மாதம் சுமந்து பெற்றெடுத்த தாய் மரியாளின் முதல் பிள்ளையான இயேசு தன் பொறுப்பை, சிலுவையில், தன் வாழ்வின் இறுதியில் செயலாக்கம் செய்கின்றார்: அப்பொழுது இயேசு தம்முடைய தாயையும் அருகே நின்ற தமக்கு அன்பாயிருந்த சீஷனையும் கண்டு, தம்முடைய தாயை நோக்கி: ஸ்திரீயே, அதோ, உன் மகன் என்றார். பின்பு அந்தச் சீஷனை நோக்கி: அதோ, உன் தாய் என்றார். அந்நேரமுதல் அந்தச் சீஷன் அவளைத் தன்னிடமாய் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டான். (யோவான் 19:26,27) 

நமக்கும் இதே கட்டளை தான்: பிள்ளைகளே, உங்கள் பெற்றாருக்குக் கர்த்தருக்குள் கீழ்ப்படியுங்கள், இது நியாயம். உனக்கு நன்மை உண்டாயிருப்பதற்கும், பூமியிலே உன் வாழ்நாள் நீடித்திருப்பதற்கும், உன் தகப்பனையும் உன் தாயையும் கனம்பண்ணுவாயாக என்பதே வாக்குத்தத்தமுள்ள முதலாங் கற்பனையாயிருக்கிறது. (எபேசியர் 6:1-3) 

இரண்டு கேள்விகள்

1. அவருக்கு சகோதரர், சகோதரிகள் உண்டே! ஏன் யோவான்? 

யாக்கோபு, யோசே, சீமோன், யூதா என்பவர்கள் இயேசுவின் சகோதரர் ஆவர்.  (மத்தேயு 13:55) குறைந்தது இரண்டு சகோதரிகள் அவருக்கு இருந்தனர் (மாற்கு 6:3). அவர்களைக் குறித்த மற்றுமொரு குறிப்பு:

 இவைகளுக்குப்பின்பு, யூதர்கள் இயேசுவைக் கொலைசெய்ய வகைதேடினபடியால், அவர் யூதேயாவிலே சஞ்சரிக்க மனதில்லாமல் கலிலேயாவிலே சஞ்சரித்துவந்தார். யூதருடைய கூடாரப்பண்டிகை சமீபமாயிருந்தது. அப்பொழுது அவருடைய சகோதரர் அவரை நோக்கி: நீர் செய்கிற கிரியைகளை உம்முடைய சீஷர்களும் பார்க்கும்படி, இவ்விடம்விட்டு யூதேயாவுக்குப் போம். பிரபலமாயிருக்க விரும்புகிற எவனும் அந்தரங்கத்திலே ஒன்றையும் செய்யமாட்டான்; நீர் இப்படிப்பட்டவைகளைச் செய்தால் உலகத்துக்கு உம்மை வெளிப்படுத்தும் என்றார்கள். அவருடைய சகோதரரும் அவரை விசுவாசியாதபடியால் இப்படிச் சொன்னார்கள். (யோவான் 7: 1-5)

காரணம்: அவர்கள் இன்னும் இயேசுவை அறிய வேண்டிய விதத்தில் அறிந்திருக்கவில்லை. 

 மேலும் இந்த வசங்களிலிருந்து கற்றுகொள்ளும் காரியம் ஒன்று உண்டு: திரள்கூட்டமான ஜனங்களும் அவருக்காகப் புலம்பி அழுகிற ஸ்திரீகளும் அவருக்குப் பின்சென்றார்கள். இயேசு அவர்கள் முகமாய்த் திரும்பி: எருசலேமின் குமாரத்திகளே, நீங்கள் எனக்காக அழாமல், உங்களுக்காகவும் உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்காகவும் அழுங்கள். (லூக்கா 23:27-28)

இந்த வார்த்தைகள் மரியாளுக்கும் பொருந்தும். மரியாளும், குறிப்பாக யோசேப்பினால் அவள் பெற்ற மற்ற பிள்ளைகளும் முழு மனம் மாற்றம் பெற்றது கிறிஸ்துவின் உயிர்த்தெழுதலுக்கு பின்னர் தான். யாக்கோபு, யூதா என்னும் சகோதரர் அப்போஸ்தலர் பணி செய்து, அவர்கள் எழுதிய கடிதங்கள் தான் வேதத்தில் உள்ளன என்று கருதப்படுகிறது. 

 2. ஏன் ஸ்திரீயே (Woman) என்று அழைக்கிறார்? 

சிலுவையில் இயேசு தம் தாயை அவ்விதம் அழைக்கும் முன்னரே இந்த வேத குறிப்பு இருக்கின்றது: திராட்சரசம் குறைவுபட்டபோது, இயேசுவின் தாய் அவரை நோக்கி: அவர்களுக்குத் திராட்சரசம் இல்லை என்றாள். அதற்கு இயேசு: ஸ்திரீயே, எனக்கும் உனக்கும் என்ன, என் வேளை இன்னும் வரவில்லை. (யோவான் 2;3,4)

காரணங்கள்:

• மாதா வணக்கம் இருக்கக்கூடாது என்பதற்காகவோ? 

• 100 சதவீதம் மனிதன், 100 சதவீதம் தெய்வம் என்பதாலும் தான்! அவர் மனித குமாரனும், தேவ குமாரனுமாய் இருந்தார். 

• இயேசுவின் குடும்பத்திற்கான விளக்கமும் வித்தியாசமானதாக தான் இருந்தது. என்ன அது?

 இப்படி அவர் ஜனங்களோடே பேசுகையில், அவருடைய தாயாரும் சகோதரரும் அவரிடத்தில் பேசவேண்டுமென்று வெளியே நின்றார்கள். அப்பொழுது, ஒருவன் அவரை நோக்கி: உம்முடைய தாயாரும் உம்முடைய சகோதரரும் உம்மோடே பேசவேண்டுமென்று வெளியே நிற்கிறார்கள் என்றான். தம்மிடத்தில் இப்படிச் சொன்னவனுக்கு அவர் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: என் தாயார் யார்? என் சகோதரர் யார்? என்று சொல்லி,தம்முடைய கையைத் தமது சீஷர்களுக்கு நேரே நீட்டி: இதோ, என் தாயும் என் சகோதரரும் இவர்களே! பரலோகத்திலிருக்கிற என் பிதாவின் சித்தத்தின்படி செய்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவனே எனக்குச் சகோதரனும் சகோதரியும் தாயுமாய் இருக்கிறான் என்றார். (மத்தேயு12:46 -50)

இயேசுவின் குடும்பம் பெரியது! அகலமானது! 

தனிமை தேவ சித்தமல்ல! 

 • குழந்தை இயேசுவிற்கு தாய் மாத்திரம் தேவை அல்ல, ஒரு குடும்பமும் தான். இதற்காக  தூதன் யோசேப்பை ஆயத்தம் செய்தான். அவனும் கீழ்படிந்தான். 

• இவன் தச்சனுடைய குமாரன் அல்லவா? இவன் தாய் மரியாள் என்பவள் அல்லவா? என்று சொல்லும் அளவு யோசேப்பின் தகப்பன் என்னும் பங்களிப்பு சிறப்பாக இருந்திருக்கிறது. 

• அனாதை, வேசியின் பிள்ளை போன்ற சொற்றொடர்கள் இறைவனுக்கு பிடிக்காதவை. வேசியின் பிள்ளை என்று கருதப்பட்டு, எள்ளி நகையாடப்பட்ட யாபேசின் விண்ணப்பத்தை கர்த்தர் கேட்டு அவனை அதிகம், அதிகமாய் ஆசீர்வதித்தாரல்லவா? (1நாளாகமம் 4: 9,10) 

• விதவைகளுக்கும் பராமரிப்பு வேண்டும். எ. கா: ரூத்தின் சரித்திரம் 

• விதவைகள் மேல அக்கறை உள்ளவர் நம் தேவன்! பழைய, புதிய ஏற்பாட்டில் எத்தனை வசனங்கள் இது குறித்து வாசிக்கின்றோம்! 

• குடும்பங்களில் வயதான பெற்றோரை, குறிப்பாக, விதவைகளை (widowers too) கவனிப்பதும், பராமரிப்பதும் மிக அவசியம். 

• பெரிய குடும்பமாகிய சபை, சமுதாய குடும்பங்களும் தனித்திருப்போரை பராமரிப்பது மிக மிக அவசியம்.

இரண்டு  காரியங்கள்

திக்கற்ற பிள்ளைகளும் விதவைகளும் படுகிற உபத்திரவத்திலே அவர்களை விசாரிக்கிறதும், உலகத்தால் கறைபடாதபடிக்குத் தன்னைக் காத்துக்கொள்ளுகிறதுமே பிதாவாகிய தேவனுக்குமுன்பாக மாசில்லாத சுத்தமான பக்தியாயிருக்கிறது. (யாக்கோபு 1:27)

யாரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள போகிறோம்? யாரை விசாரிக்க போகிறோம் என்பதில்  நம் பக்தி அடங்கியுள்ளது.  

வேறே ஆடுகள்

 “இந்தத் தொழுவத்திலுள்ளவைகளல்லாமல் வேறே ஆடுகளும் எனக்கு உண்டு; அவைகளையும் நான் கொண்டுவரவேண்டும், அவைகள் என் சத்தத்துக்குச் செவிகொடுக்கும். அப்பொழுது ஒரே மந்தையும் ஒரே மேய்ப்பனுமாகும்” (யோவான் 10:16) என்று இயேசு கூறிய வார்த்தைகளில் ‘வேறே ஆடுகள்’ ‘ஒரே மந்தை’, ‘ஒரே மேய்ப்பன்’ என்னும் பதங்கள் சமீபத்தில் என்னை சிந்திக்கத் தூண்டின. அதன் விளைவே இந்த கட்டுரை.

பழைய ஏற்பாட்டில் – வேறே ஆடுகள் – சில உதாரணங்கள்

அனைவரையும் உள்ளடக்கும் நல்லுள்ளம் கொண்ட தேவன், படைப்பில் அனைவரையும் அவர் சாயலில் படைத்தார். ஆண்களும், பெண்களும் ஆகிய நாம் அனைவரும்  பரிசுத்த ஜாதியே அன்றி இந்த ஒரே மந்தையில் வேறு எந்த பிரிவினையும் இருக்கக்கூடாது.

தேவன் யாக்கோபிடம் இவ்விதம் கூறினார்: நான் சர்வவல்லமையுள்ள தேவன், நீ பலுகிப் பெருகுவாயாக; ஒரு ஜாதியும் பற்பல ஜாதிகளின் கூட்டங்களும் உன்னிலிருந்து உண்டாகும். (ஆதியாகமம் 35:11) இதன் நிறைவேறுதலை ஆபிரகாமின் குமாரனாகிய தாவீதின் குமாரனான இயேசுகிறிஸ்துவினுடைய வம்ச வரலாற்றில் நாம் காணலாம். இந்த பட்டியலில் காணப்படும் தாமார் (கானானிய பெண்), ராகாப் (எரிகோவில் ஒரு வேசி), ரூத் (மோவாபிய பெண்), பத்சேபாள் (ஏத்தியனாகிய உரியாவின் மனைவி) ஆகியோரும் ‘வேறே ஆடுகள்’ தானே! தீர்க்கன் யோனா செல்ல விரும்பாத புறஜாதிகள் என்று கருதப்பட்ட நினிவேயினர் மனம் திருந்தினர். அவர்களும் வேறே ஆடுகள் தான்.

 புதிய ஏற்பாட்டில் - வேறே ஆடுகள் - சில உதாரணங்கள்

கர்த்தருடைய ஆவியானவர் என்மேலிருக்கிறார்; தரித்திரருக்குச் சுவிசேஷத்தைப் பிரசங்கிக்கும்படி என்னை அபிஷேகம் பண்ணினார்; இருதயம் நருங்குண்டவர்களைக் குணமாக்கவும், சிறைப்பட்டவர்களுக்கு விடுதலையையும், குருடருக்குப் பார்வையையும் பிரசித்தப்படுத்தவும், நொறுங்குண்டவர்களை விடுதலையாக்கவும், கர்த்தருடைய அநுக்கிரக வருஷத்தைப் பிரசித்தப்படுத்தவும், என்னை அனுப்பினார் (லூக்கா 4:18-28) என்று இயேசு கூறிய தன் அருட்பணியின் சட்ட வாக்கியத்தில் அவர் எத்தனை வித விதமான வேறே ஆடுகள் குறித்துக் கூறுகின்றார்? இப்படிப்பட்டோரை நாம் தினமும் சந்திக்கிறோம் அல்லவா?

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து அவர் பழைய ஏற்பாட்டின் ‘வேறே ஆடுகள்’ குறித்தும் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார்: அன்றியும் எலியாவின் நாட்களிலே மூன்று வருஷமும் ஆறுமாதமும் வானம் அடைபட்டு, தேசமெங்கும் மிகுந்த பஞ்சம் உண்டாயிருந்தபோது, இஸ்ரவேலருக்குள் அநேகம் விதவைகள் இருந்தார்கள். ஆயினும் எலியா சீதோன் நாட்டிலுள்ள சரெப்தா (சாறிபாத்) ஊரிலிருந்த ஒரு விதவையினிடத்திற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டானேயல்லாமல்  மற்றொருத்தியினிடத்திற்கும் அனுப்பப்படவில்லை. அல்லாமலும் எலிசா தீர்க்கதரிசியின் காலத்திலே இஸ்ரவேலருக்குள்ளே அநேகம் குஷ்டரோகிகள் இருந்தார்கள்; ஆயினும் சீரியா தேசத்தானாகிய நாகமானேயல்லாமல் அவர்களில் வேறொருவனும் சுத்தமாக்கப்படவில்லை.

ஜெபஆலயத்திலிருந்த எல்லாரும், இவைகளைக் கேட்டபொழுது, கோபமூண்டு, எழுந்திருந்து, இயேசுவை ஊருக்குப் புறம்பே தள்ளி, தங்கள் ஊர் கட்டப்பட்டிருந்த செங்குத்தான மலையின் சிகரத்திலிருந்து அவரைத் தலைகீழாய்த் தள்ளிவிடும்படிக்கு அவ்விடத்திற்குக் கொண்டுபோனார்கள். இதிலிருந்து நாம் கற்றுக்கொள்வது என்ன? ‘வேறே ஆடுகள்’ குறித்த பாரத்தோடு செயல்படுவோருக்கு கட்டாயம் பிரச்சனை உண்டு எனபதும் தான்! பச்சை மரத்திற்கே இப்படிச் செய்தால் பட்ட மரத்திற்கு என்னதான் செய்யமாட்டார்கள்? (லூக் 23:31)

 தேவனை வணங்குவோர் (God Fearers) என்னும் வேறே ஆடுகள்

தியத்தீரா ஊராளும் இரத்தாம்பரம் விற்கிறவளும் தேவனை வணங்குகிறவளுமாகிய லீதியாள் என்னும் பேருள்ள ஒரு ஸ்திரீ கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தாள்; பவுல் சொல்லியவைகளைக் கவனிக்கும்படி கர்த்தர் அவள் இருதயத்தைத் திறந்தருளினார்.  அவளும் அவள் வீட்டாரும் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெற்றபின்பு, அவள் எங்களை நோக்கி: நீங்கள் என்னைக் கர்த்தரிடத்தில் விசுவாசமுள்ளவளென்று எண்ணினால், என் வீட்டிலே வந்து தங்கியிருங்கள் என்று எங்களை வருந்திக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டாள். (அப்போஸ்தலர் 16:14,15) ஆதி திருச்சபையில் இந்த லீதியாள் போல தேவனை வணங்குவோர் என்னும் ஒரு கூட்டத்தினர் இருந்து வந்தனர். யூதரின் ஒரே தேவனை அவர்கள் பயத்தோடு வணங்கி வந்தனர். ஆனால் இவர்கள் விருத்தசேதனம், திருமுழுக்கு பெறாதவர். இவர்களை யூத விசுவாசிகள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாததை லீதியாள், “நீங்கள் என்னைக் கர்த்தரிடத்தில் விசுவாசமுள்ளவளென்று எண்ணினால்’ என்று கூறியதிலிருந்து அறிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

லீதியாள் போன்ற இப்படிப்பட்ட ‘வேறே ஆடுகளின்’ கூட்டத்தில் அப்போஸ்தலர் புத்தகத்தில் நாம் காணும் எத்தியோப்பிய மந்திரி (8: 26-39) கொர்நேலியு போன்றோரும் அடங்குவர் (10:1,2). இவர்களைக் குறித்து பவுலும் “ஆபிரகாமின் சந்ததியில் பிறந்தவர்களே, தேவனுக்குப் பயந்து நடக்கிறவர்களே, இந்த இரட்சிப்பின் வசனம் உங்களுக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டிருக்கிறது” (அப் 13: 16, 26) என்று இயேசுவின் ஒரே மந்தைக்குள் அவர்களை இணைத்துக்கொள்ளுவதைப் பார்க்கலாம்.

ஆடுகளும் நாமே, மேய்ப்பரும் நாமே

‘என் ஆடுகளை மேய்ப்பாயாக’ (யோவான் 21: 15-17) என்ற இயேசுவின் அன்புக் கட்டளையை பெற்ற அப்போஸ்தலனாகிய பேதுரு நமக்கு கொடுக்கும் கட்டளை என்ன? “உங்களிடத்திலுள்ள தேவனுடைய மந்தையை நீங்கள் மேய்த்து, கட்டாயமாய் அல்ல, மனப்பூர்வமாயும், அவலட்சணமான ஆதாயத்திற்காக அல்ல, உற்சாக மனதோடும், சுதந்தரத்தை இறுமாப்பாய் ஆளுகிறவர்களாக அல்ல, மந்தைக்கு மாதிரிகளாகவும், கண்காணிப்புச் செய்யுங்கள்.  அப்படிச் செய்தால் பிரதான மேய்ப்பர் வெளிப்படும்போது மகிமையுள்ள வாடாத கிரீடத்தைப் பெறுவீர்கள்.” (1 பேதுரு 5:2-4).

இந்த ஒரே மந்தைக்குள் நாம் கொண்டு வரும் ‘பிற ஆடுகள்’ நம் வாழ்வில் இன்று எத்தனை பேர்?

 

 

அனுபவ சாட்சியும், படிப்பினைகளும்

 

இலங்கை தேசம் பொருளாதார நெருக்கடியை எதிர்கொண்டு, எங்கும் போராட்டங்களில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த கொந்தளிப்பான நேரத்தில் எனக்கும்  என் கணவர் சுரேஷுக்கும் அங்கிருந்து ஊழிய அழைப்பு வந்தது. இந்த பயணத்தை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டாம் என்று இந்தியாவில் உள்ள எங்கள் குடும்பத்தினர், நண்பர்கள் எங்களை வேண்டிக்கொண்டனர். ஒரு சமூக ஊடக இடுகையின் மூலம் கடவுள் எங்களுக்கு தூண்டுதலைக் கொடுத்தார். அதன் பிறகு நாங்கள் எங்கள் பிரயாணத்தை மேற்கொண்டோம்.

இலங்கையில் உணவுப் பற்றாக்குறை, மின்வெட்டு, உள் இடங்களுக்குச் செல்லும் அசௌகரியமான பயணம் போன்றவற்றில் மக்கள் படும் வேதனைகளையும் துன்பங்களையும் நாங்களும்  அனுபவித்தோம். இவை அனைத்தையும் தேவ தயவால் மேற்கொண்டு, அத்தீவு தேசத்தில் ஊழியத்தில் நற்பலன்களைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தோம். எங்கள் உறவினர்களில் ஒருவரான ஆங்கிலிக்கன் பாதிரியார் ஒருவர் வந்து எங்களை அவரது வீட்டிற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டியிருந்தது. ஏப்ரல் 24 ஆம் தேதி ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை மலைப்பாங்கான இடத்தில் உள்ள அவரது தேவாலயத்தில் நாங்கள் பேசுவதற்கும் அவர் திட்டமிட்டிருந்தார். ஆனால் எரிபொருள் தட்டுப்பாடு மற்றும் அது தொடர்பான பிரச்சனைகள் காரணமாக எங்களால் அவரது இடத்திற்குச் செல்ல முடியவில்லை.

கர்த்தர் எங்களுக்கு ஒரு மாற்று திட்டத்தை வைத்திருந்தார். இலங்கையில் எங்கள் கூட்டங்களின் போது நாங்கள் சந்தித்த ஒரு போதகர் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை கொழும்பில் உள்ள அவரது தேவாலயத்தில் இரண்டு ஆராதனைகளில் பிரசங்கிக்க எங்களை அழைத்தார். என் கணவர் முதல் ஆராதனையில் பிரசங்கம் செய்துவிட்டு, வேறொரு சபைக்குச் சென்று அங்கும்  தேவ செய்தி அளித்தார். அங்கே போதகரின் மனைவி உட்பட பலரது இதயங்களை கர்த்தர் அன்று உயிர்ப்பித்தார். நான் முதல் சபையில் இரண்டாவது  ஆராதனையில் பிரசங்கித்த பிறகு, இறை வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு மக்கள் எப்படி தொடப்பட்டார்கள் என்று சொன்ன போது தேவன் மகிமைப்பட்டார். மக்கள் குணமடைய பிரார்த்தனைகளையும் ஏறெடுத்தேன். அது ஒரு ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்ட ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையாக அமைந்தது.

 இதற்குப் பிறகு நாங்கள் இருவரும் போதகரின் குடும்பத்துடன் ஒரு ஹோட்டலில் உணவுக்காக சென்றோம். சாப்பிட்டு மகிழ்ந்தோம்.  அப்போது என் கணவர் கை கழுவச் சென்றபோது, ​​திடீரென மூர்ச்சை அடைந்தார்.  மூளையதிர்ச்சி போல் இருந்தது. எந்த ஒரு அறிகுறியும் இல்லாமல் வந்தது.

போதகரின் குடும்பத்தினர் மற்றும் ஹோட்டலில் இருந்த உதவும் உள்ளம் கொண்ட அந்நியர்களின் உதவியோடு என் கணவரை டாக்ஸியில் ஏற்றிச் சென்றோம்.  ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை ஆனதால் கிளினிக்குகள் மூடப்பட்டிருந்தன. இறுதியாக, இரண்டு செவிலியர்கள் இருந்த ஒரு கிளினிக்கிற்கு என் கணவரை தூக்கிச் சென்றோம்.  அப்போது என் கணவருக்கு சர்க்கரை அளவு 600க்கு மேல் இருந்ததை கண்டுபிடித்தனர். காலையில் உணவு உண்ணாமல் இருந்ததன் விளைவும், அன்றைய தினம் அவர் சர்க்கரை மருந்துகளை எடுக்காமல் இருந்ததும் காரணமாக இருக்கலாம் என்பதை உணர்ந்தேன்.

முந்தைய நாட்கள் பரபரப்பாகவே இருந்தது. அந்த சனிக்கிழமை இரவும் என் கணவர் ஒரு மணி நேரம் மாத்திரமே தூங்கி இருந்தார். அவர் பிரசங்கித்த இரண்டாவது தேவாலயத்தில் கரண்ட் இல்லாததால், அவர் அதிகமாக வியர்த்து, நீரிழப்புக்கு ஆளானார். இருந்தாலும் நல்ல மருத்துவமனை கிடைக்கவும், முறையான சிகிச்சை கிடைக்கவும் கடவுள் வழி நடத்த வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டிக் கொண்டே இருந்தேன். நான் என் வாயைத் திறந்து சத்தமாக ஜெபித்துக்கொண்டே இருந்தேன். அப்பொழுது டாக்ஸி கொழும்பில் உள்ள ஒரு பெரிய மருத்துவமனை முன் நின்றது. அவருக்கு சர்க்கரை அளவைக் குறைக்க உடனடி மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டது.

சிடி ஸ்கேன் எடுத்துப் பார்த்ததில் அவருக்கு மூளையில் சிறிய ரத்த உறைவு இருப்பது தெரியவந்தது. மருத்துவர்கள் பீதி அடைய வேண்டாம் என்றும், மருந்துகளால் குணப்படுத்த முடியும் என்று கூறினார்கள். அவரை அழைத்து வர தாமதித்திருந்தால் அவர் கோமா நிலைக்குச் சென்றிருக்கலாம் என்றும் கூறினர். ஐசியூவில் அவர் கண்காணிக்கப்பட்டார். உலகம் முழுவதும் உள்ள பக்தர்களின் பிரார்த்தனைகளை கர்த்தர் கேட்டார். ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் எனக்கு ஒரு தனியான தருணம் அமையவே இல்லை. அந்த அந்நிய தேசத்தில் எப்போதும் நண்பர்கள் மற்றும் உறவினர்களால் நான் சூழப்பட்டிருந்தேன். எங்கள் மகன், கிஃப்ட்சனும் இந்தியாவிலிருந்து வந்து, மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் மூவருமாக இந்தியாவுக்குத் திரும்பினோம்!

எங்களது ஊரான கோயம்புத்தூரில் நடத்தப்பட்ட  தொடர் மருத்துவப் பரிசோதனையில் கணவரின் உடல்நிலை சரியாக இருப்பதாகத் தெரியவந்தது. உடனடியாக இந்தியாவின் நாக்பூரில் நடந்த ஒரு வேதாகம மொழிபெயர்ப்புப் பட்டறையிலும் கலந்துகொண்டோம். வேலூர் CMC-யில் இன்னும் சில மருத்துவ ஆலோசனைகளையும் தொடர்ந்து இறைபணி செய்வதற்கான ஊக்கத்தையும் பெற்றோம்.

கர்த்தர் நல்லவர், எந்த சூழலிலும் அவர் நல்லவர். இந்த அனுபவ சாட்சியின் மூலம் எங்களது கற்றல் மற்றும் எச்சரிக்கைகளில் சிலவற்றை இங்கே தருகிறேன்:

1.  இந்த சடிதியான சுகவீனத்திற்கு ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம் எங்கள் வீட்டில் இருந்த ஒரு பிழையான சர்க்கரை மானிட்டர். இதில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட கீற்றுகள்(strips) காலாவதி தேதியை கடந்துவிட்டன. அது எப்போதிலிருந்து தவறான எண்ணிக்கைக் காட்டியது என்பது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. இலங்கைக்கு செல்வதற்கு முன் என் கணவர் தனது சர்க்கரை கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருப்பதாக கருதி மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தார். அது உண்மையல்ல. அதே பிழையான எண்ணை வீட்டுக்கு வந்த பிறகும் காட்டும் போது தான் தவற்றை உணர்ந்தோம்!

2. வீட்டிற்கு வெளியே நீண்ட தினங்கள் தங்கியிருக்கும் பிரயாணங்களின் போது சர்க்கரை மற்றும் இரத்த அழுத்தத்தை அவ்வப்போது அளவிட இந்த மானிட்டர்களை எடுத்துச் செல்வது நல்லது.

3. சரியான ஓய்வும், உறக்கமும் கட்டாயம் அவசியம்.

4. என் கணவர் தனது சர்க்கரை கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருப்பதாக நினைத்து, அங்குள்ள வெப்பமான தட்பவெப்பநிலையின் காரணமாக குளிர்ந்த சர்க்கரை அதிகமுள்ள சோடாக்கள், பழச்சாறுகள் ஆகியவற்றை அதிகம் பருகினார். குளிர்ந்த நீரை பருகியிருக்கலாம்.

5. சரியான வேளையில் உணவு மற்றும் சரியான வேளைகளில் மருந்துகளை உட்கொள்ள வேண்டும்

 இப்போது எங்கள் ஊழிய பயணங்களை ஞானமாக மேற்கொள்ள முடிவு செய்துள்ளோம். இளம் ஊழியர்களை பயிற்றுவிக்கிறோம். எங்களுக்காக ஜெபித்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். உங்களுக்கும் எங்கள் அன்பும் பிரார்த்தனைகளும்!

 மிஞ்சின நீதிமானாயிராதே, உன்னை அதிக ஞானியுமாக்காதே; உன்னை நீ ஏன் கெடுத்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும்? மிஞ்சின துஷ்டனாயிராதே, அதிக பேதையுமாயிராதே; உன் காலத்துக்குமுன்னே நீ ஏன் சாகவேண்டும்? நீ இதைப் பற்றிக்கொள்வதும் அதைக் கைவிடாதிருப்பதும் நலம்; தேவனுக்குப் பயப்படுகிறவன் இவைகளெல்லாவற்றினின்றும் காக்கப்படுவான்.  (பிரசங்கி 7:16-18)

Blessings of the Pentecost

The almanac readings during the celebration of Pentecost Sunday last week led me to think about the blessings of the first Pentecost event of the early church found in Acts 2. I will share few of my thoughts here.

Unity

The psalmist said, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity...For there the Lord bestows his blessing” (Psalm 133:1) The believers, 120 of them were meeting together in one place. (Acts 1:15, 2:1) The Spirit of the living God chose to descend on this group of believers who were obedient to the command of Jesus and were praying in unison. (Acts 1:5, 14) Did not Jesus say earlier, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them”? (Mathew 18:20)

Community

Unlike the Old Testament times where the Spirit of God would descend on individuals, here for the first time the Holy Spirit descended on a group of believers, on a community, in an inclusive manner in fulfilment of Joel’s prophecy: And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. (Joel 2:28,29) This group of believers were of all kinds, comprising of both men and women. (Acts 1:14)

Has not Apostle Peter included us when he said, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light”? (1 Peter 2:9)

Evangelism

The gift of tongues spoken by the believers that day was a miracle that led to giving the gospel in their respective languages to the ready-made audience there. There were God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven that could hear them. (v.5) The world was in the nearest vicinity for the disciples. Unlike many cases where we travel miles to share the good news to people here it was a God-ordained global crowd at the footstep of the upper room!

Gift of Tongues

Interestingly the strange language that came upon the believers was understood by the people from nearly 16 different nations and linguistic contexts. (v. 9-11) What did they say? “We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (v.11) This is the only place where the gift of tongues was understood this way in the book of Acts! How can we repeat such a language-miracle in our context today?

When Cameron Townsend was working in Guatemala as a missionary, these words were spoken by a Cakchiquel Indian which eventually changed his life. These were those words: “If your God is so great, why doesn’t he speak my language?” Townsend abandoned his attempts to sell Bibles and began living among the Cakchiquels. He learned their complex language, created an alphabet for it, analyzed the grammar, and translated the New Testament in a remarkably short span of ten years.

We too can be the tools today in helping people declare the wonders of God in their tongues by giving the Bible in the people’s mother tongues.

Multitudes

What was the result of Peter’s preaching during the Pentecost event? About three thousand were added to their number that day. (v.41) The book of Acts thereafter is about numbers, growth, multiplication of believers and churches. Multitudes is also the final blessing we look forward to! Apostle John records that blessing: After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. (Rev 7:9)

I wish and pray that we would inherit these blessings and be a blessing to the multitudes around us!

 

Learnings & Warnings

 

Suresh and I got an invitation from Sri Lanka in a turbulent time when the nation was facing a huge economic crisis and was involved in protests everywhere. We were discouraged by family, friends in India not to make this trip. God gave some prompting in us through a social media post after which we booked our tickets happily.

In Sri Lanka we tasted the pain and the suffering the people were undergoing in the areas of shortage of food, power-cuts, uncomfortable travel to interior places and so on. With all these, the primary purpose of our visit to the island-nation could be achieved. We were glad. One of our relatives, an Anglican priest was supposed to come and take us to his house. He had also planned for us to speak in his church in a hilly place on Sunday, the 24^th of April. But due to shortage of fuel and related problems, we could not go to his place.

God had an alternate plan for us. One pastor whom we met during our meetings in Sri Lanka invited us to preach in her church in Colombo in two services on the Sunday. Suresh preached in the first service and moved on to another church where he was invited to preach too. God revived many hearts including the pastor’s wife there. Praise God. After I preached in the second service there were people lining up to say how they were transformed hearing God’s words. There were prayers for healing too. It was a blessed Sunday. After this we went for fellowship over food in a hotel with the pastor’s family. We enjoyed the meal and fun. While going to wash his hands, Suresh had a cerebral attack suddenly. It came with no symptoms.

Somehow with the help of the pastor’s family and strangers in the hotel we managed to carry Suresh to a taxi. To our shock, clinics were closed. Finally, we carried my husband to a clinic where there were two nurses. They found that his sugar level was 600 plus. I realized that it could have been the result of him not taking food in the morning and his forgoing of sugar medications that day. The previous days were hectic. Suresh had an hour’s sleep on that Saturday night. With no current in the second church he preached, he had sweated profusely and had got dehydrated. However, I was praying that God should guide us to a good hospital and for a proper treatment. I opened my mouth and kept praying in the entire ordeal, no silent prayer! Praise God, we could bring Suresh to a very big hospital in Colombo. Immediate medical care was given to bring down his sugar level.

A CT scan revealed that he had a small blood clot in the brain. Doctors said not to panic and that the clot could be healed by medicines. I was also told that had we delayed in bringing him in he could have gone into a coma. He was monitored in the ICU. God heard the prayers of saints around the world. There was not one solitary moment for me in the hospital. I was always surrounded by friends and relatives in that foreign land. Our son, Giftson flew in too. Praise God. We retuned to India with happiness and joy! 

Another series of medical investigations in Coimbatore revealed that Suresh’s vitals are perfectly okay. Praise God that we could even make it to a Bible translation workshop that happened in Nagpur, India immediately after we flew in. We are looking forward to having some more medical advice at CMC, Vellore in the coming week.

God is good, all the time!

Here are some of our learnings and warnings:

1. One main culprit in this episode was an erroneous sugar-monitor that was in our house. The strips used in this had crossed the expiry date. We do not know from when it showed wrong readings. Prior to going to Sri Lanka, Suresh was happy to know that his sugar was under control. It was not true. We realized that only after coming home because it showed the same erroneous reading!
2. It is good to carry these monitors, not the faulty ones, to measure sugar and pressure periodically during long stays outside of home.
3. Proper rest is a must.
4. Suresh thinking that his sugar was under control, indulged in drinking cold sugary sodas, juices all through his trip because of the hot climate there. Cold water could have been the option!
5. Diabetics must really care for a proper diet and periodical medicines.
6. Last but not the least, equip and empower the next generation to take the mantle.

Now we have decided to run our race steadily and wisely. Keep us in your prayers. Our love and prayers to you as well!

Do not be overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself? Do not be excessively wicked, and do not be a fool. Why should you die before your time?  It is good to grasp the one and not let the other slip from your hand. For he who fears God will follow both warnings. (Ecclesiastes 7:16-18)
